Quickstart

  1. Install Ix

    Terminal window
    curl -fsSL https://ix-infra.com/install.sh | sh

    On Windows, see Installation.

  2. Map a repository

From the root of any repository:

    Terminal window
    ix map .

Ix parses every supported file, extracts symbols, calls and imports, and stores them in the local graph. The graph persists, so later sessions start from it instead of from scratch.

  3. Ask it questions

    Terminal window
ix search AuthService --kind class # find an entity by name
ix explain AuthService # what it is and what it touches
ix callers verify_token # what calls this function
ix trace user_login_flow # follow a flow up and down
ix impact verify_token # what breaks if I change it

Replace the names with symbols from your own code.

  4. Find the load-bearing code

    Terminal window
ix rank --by dependents --kind class --top 10
  5. Connect your AI agent

    Terminal window
    ix mcp install

This detects the AI clients installed on your machine and registers Ix’s MCP server with each one. Then ask your agent a question about the codebase. See AI agents for details.

  6. See it

    Terminal window
    ix view

This opens Compass, the visualizer, in your browser.
